Financial Controller

For the last 8 years we have had a part time Finance Director through the FD Centre who has set up systems, procedures, reporting, team structure and guided us through BREXIT & through COVID and we now feel ready to have a full in house team, our part time FD will remain in position for a hand over and briefing and will then be retained part time to work with the directors on other strategic business interests.
We have a great finance team of 4 people (including you) and a HR / Compliance / Office Management team of 3 – all based in Nottingham.
The Financial Controller is responsible for managing the company’s financial planning, maintaining its financial records, producing financial reports, and overseeing the overall financial health of the organisation, including treasury responsibilities. This role involves ensuring the accuracy of financial information, compliance with regulations, and effective financial strategies to support company objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Financial Management:
• Oversee the preparation and analysis of financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
• Manage the accounting operations including Billing, A/R, A/P, GL, Cost Accounting, Inventory Accounting, and Revenue Recognition.
• Coordinate and direct the preparation of the budget and financial forecasts and report variances.
• Treasury management – review and approval of bank transactions, controlling bank transfers to optimise interest earned on deposits.
2. Financial Reporting:
• Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes.
• Prepare and publish timely monthly financial statements.
• Coordinate the preparation of regulatory reporting.
3. Internal Controls and Compliance:
• Establish and enforce proper accounting methods, policies, and principles.
• Ensure compliance HMRC reporting requirements and tax filings.
• Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls alongside our ISO accredited integrated management systems.
4. Audit and Risk Management:
• Liaise with external auditors and coordinate the audit process.
• Oversee and manage internal audits and reviews.
• Identify and mitigate financial risks to the company.
5. Team Leadership:
• Manage and mentor the accounting team, providing guidance and training as needed.
• Day to day management of the Finance Team, setting & coordinating tasks & maintaining standards and quality.
• Evaluate and enhance financial operations to increase efficiencies and improve performance.
6. Operational Duties:
• Oversee the operations of the finance department, including the design of an organisational structure adequate for achieving the department's goals and objectives.
• Ensure that accounts payable are paid in a timely manner and accounts receivable are collected promptly.
• Manage outsourced functions and special projects as needed.
Qualifications:
• Qualified Accountant – ACA, ACCA or CIMA.
• Proven working experience as a Financial Controller or senior-level accountant.
• Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and procedures.
• Experience with creating financial statements.
• Experience with general ledger functions and the month-end/year-end close process.
• Excellent accounting software user and administration skills.
Skills and Competencies:
• Strong leadership and management skills.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• High attention to detail and accuracy.
• Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
Working Conditions:
• Office environment with standard working hours. (Open to discuss modified hours to suit work / life balance)
• 3 or 4 days / week with flexibility on working days to suit the management of the team.
• Hybrid Part Time Contract (2 Days minimum in the office)
