St. Johns Centre in Leeds is set to transform into purpose-built student accommodation. We’re excited to share that our design proposals for Global Mutual and Patron Capital have been granted planning approval by Leeds City Council.
The proposal’s will create 287 student beds in a mix of studios and cluster bedrooms, arranged around a new private landscaped terrace on the roof of the shopping centre.
The decision to repurpose and upgrade, rather than demolish the existing building with a targeted BREEAM Excellent rating, is driven by Leonard Design’s commitment to reducing life cycle carbon in all their projects and the belief that the greenest building is one that already exists.
The existing cladding will be replaced with new facades to improve fire safety and ensure that an A1 rating is achieved in compliance with the Building Safety Act. The design of the new facades have been considered to respond to local context, the new use of the building and provide a long lasting and high quality finish that has been supported by Leeds Civic Trust.
We would like to thanks Leeds City Council officers for their proactive and positive approach that has driven a high quality scheme, resulting in a successful planning application.
