Skylarks Care Home, a specialist in dementia care, is characterised by its location within close proximity to Holme Pierrepont, Skylarks Nature Reserve and within the bountiful landscape of Nottinghamshire’s Greenbelt.
Working closely with Church Farm Care, Grace Machin Planning and Property, and Influence Landscape Architects, Leonard Design Architects produced a scheme which effectively grounded the care home within the existing site and the wider community. The hydrotherapy swimming facilities were reinstated and offered to members of the local community, as well as the proposal of a small ancillary café facilities, shops and a bakery, and an extension of 32 bedrooms over ground and first floor.
It was a fundamental requirement from the beginning of conceptual development that the design should create stimulating spaces of an intimate scale within the care home to encourage residents to feel relaxed, and in an environment which feels comfortable and homely. These spaces should mitigate common feelings of anxiety, depression and fear which are often experienced by those living with dementia.
