Building on the success of Urban Playground at Manchester Arndale, The Mellors Group partnered with Leonard Design to reimagine ‘The Cube Live’, creating an enhanced play experience at a compact London site.
Mellors’ earlier site housed twelve cubes and two bars, but at Wood Wharf we embraced the challenge of developing a bold design with 21 cubes, six bars, two dining offers, and a VIP mezzanine within a compact space which celebrated the Wharf’s rich heritage.
We developed the Baranowitz & Kronenberg concept vision, transforming it from a 1,720 sqm, two-level landlord shell into a dynamic 2,230 sqm, six-level leisure and entertainment venue with dramatic slab openings and additional levels. Ground floor areas were raised to give the game cubes a street-level presence, prioritising maintaining visual connections and crafting diverse seating arrangements that recreate the audience dynamic. Complementing this, raw industrial materials, exposed steelwork, and custom lighting pay homage to the rich history of Canary Wharf.
As technical architects through RIBA Stages 3 to 4, our role included orchestrating the intricate structural, MEP, and fire engineering. During RIBA Stage 5 we were novated to the contractor to ensure continuity on a complex scheme.
