A forward-thinking brand identity and signage for a new student living experience in the heart of Nottingham City Centre. Drawing on the city’s historic textile industry, the identity weaves together heritage and contemporary high-quality design.
Fabric is a significant 10 storey, 319 bed student residential scheme, with an impressive range of communal spaces and amenities now synonymous with modern aspirational student living.
Nottingham has a rich history in the textile industry, and to this day is an important hub for textile manufacturing and innovation. This, allied to our site being located in the heart of the city, and its historic manufacturing base, was a natural source of inspiration in the naming and branding of the development.
We explored a number of design approaches drawing on the ‘warp and ‘weft – the component parts of weaving fabrics with threads and yarns. This interwoven pattern was used to construct a custom-drawn letter as the initial wordmark for the new brand. Reproduced in a striking high contrast dark and light grey, the logo has become a powerful, iconic and instantly recognisable identity, befitting of this lifestyle-driven accommodation, and giving our client a point of difference in a crowded market. We also created a unique font to work in tandem with the wordmark, or both separately as a kit of parts.
Our Graphic Design team worked holistically with the Leonard Design Architecture and Styling teams to develop key applications of the identity, from site hoardings and building signage, through to several items of merchandise and branded collateral.
