Arup and Leonard Design teamed up with Scale Rule and Nottingham Trent University to inspire the next generation of engineers, architects, and designers across Nottinghamshire.
Local students were invited to a 2-day workshop comprising a mix of short talks from the team about architecture and engineering, and design workshops to allow the students to put what they’ve learnt into action. In small teams, they designed a pavilion to meet a real brief for a structure in the heart of Nottingham. Using only a given set of materials, the teams created concept sketches and models, detailed explanatory drawings, and presented their designs to our panel of professionals.
Following the workshops, Arup and Leonard Design developed the winning Pavilion concept, “The Social Shell”, into a fully buildable design and with careful consideration of material, joints, fixings and 3D modelling software, the pavilion was able to be manufactured in a flat-pack kit of parts, and erected in a single day. The finished construction formed part of “The Nottingham Beach”, which was open to the public throughout the summer of 2019.
