Following a number of successful collaborations at airports, Lotte Duty Free approached us to refurbish their outdated city centre space at the top of Lotte’s Sogong-dong Department Store. Our aim was to encourage greater exploration and appeal to a broader range of customers.
Initial analysis revealed that a mere aesthetic overhaul would not fulfil the project’s objectives. With client agreement, our focus expanded to encompass the interior architecture and retail planning within which the aesthetic update would be realised.
Beyond formulating design concepts for each merchandise zone, our proposals replaced obsolete, enclosed spaces with contemporary, open concession halls. This transformation enhanced visibility and circulation across each floor and up through the building levels.
To create the Beauty Atrium, we removed decades of clutter to reveal a singular barrel-vaulted space. Key to reinventing this space was layering a secondary structure of tapering inclined arches beneath the dated existing roof. The arches intersect to form a diagrid and accommodate a range of premium finishes and louvres which filter light throughout the space. We relocated premium cosmetics and perfumes to the ‘Beauty Atrium’ to create the store’s must-see customer destination.
